The Way to Victory Sermon Series - Part 4

Good Friday
Sermon follow-up 4/19/25

Introduction

On Good Friday, we remember one of the most pivotal moments in human history - when Jesus Christ declared "It is finished" from the cross. These three powerful words marked not just an ending, but a victory that changed everything.

What Does "It Is Finished" Really Mean?
When Jesus spoke these words, He wasn't admitting defeat. Rather, it was a triumphant declaration that His mission was accomplished. The Greek word used indicates a debt fully paid and settled. But what exactly was finished? Let's explore three key aspects.

1. The Payment Was Finished
Jesus paid the full price for humanity's sin - past, present and future. He took all our wrongdoing, shame, and guilt upon Himself at the cross. The debt we owed because of sin was completely canceled and nailed to the cross.
This wasn't just for sins committed up to that point, but for all sins throughout history. As 1 John 2 explains, Jesus became the atoning sacrifice not just for our sins, but for the sins of the whole world.
2. The Road Was Finished
Through His death, Jesus bridged the impossible gap between humanity and God. The temple curtain that separated people from God's presence was torn in two, symbolizing that access to God was now available to all through Christ.
We can now approach God with confidence, knowing the way has been opened through Jesus' sacrifice. The barrier of sin that kept us from God has been removed.
3. The Work Was Finished
Unlike the old system where priests had to continually offer sacrifices, Jesus' one-time sacrifice was completely sufficient. After completing His work on the cross, He sat down at God's right hand - indicating the work was truly finished.
This means we don't have to strive to earn God's love or acceptance. Jesus accomplished what we never could, allowing us to rest in His completed work.

Life Application

  • The question now is: How will you respond to what Jesus finished on the cross? Consider these questions:
    • Have you accepted the payment Jesus made for your sins?
    • Are you trying to earn God's love through your own efforts instead of resting in Christ's finished work?
    • Do you live in freedom from shame, knowing Jesus took it all at the cross?

  • This week, whenever you feel burdened by guilt or shame, remember to look to the cross. Jesus' words "It is finished" mean you don't have to carry those burdens anymore. Choose to walk in the freedom Christ purchased for you.

The invitation is simple: Come to Jesus. Bring your doubts, sins, burdens, and shame to Him. The work is finished - all that's left is for you to receive what He has already done.
