Ephesians Sermon Series - Part 2
Unity in Christ - New Society
Sermon follow-up 11/18/24
Introduction
In today's sermon, we explored the transformative power of Jesus' love and the unity He brings to believers. Through the lens of Ephesians 2 and 3, we delved into how Christ's sacrifice breaks down barriers and forms a new society in Him. This message is a reminder of the hope and peace we find in Jesus, and how it calls us to live in unity and love with one another.
Remembering Our Past and Embracing Our Future
What Does It Mean to Be Far From God?
Paul begins by urging us to remember our past. Before knowing Christ, we were separated from God, alienated, and without hope. This separation is a universal human condition, but through Jesus, we are brought near to God. This nearness changes everything, providing us with peace, security, and a sense of belonging.
The Dividing Wall of Hostility
In the first century, a literal wall in the Jerusalem Temple separated Jews from Gentiles. This wall symbolized the deep divisions and hostilities between different groups. Paul uses this imagery to explain how Jesus' death on the cross breaks down all barriers, reconciling us to God and to each other.
A New Society in Christ
Unity Through Christ
Paul emphasizes that in Christ, we are no longer strangers or aliens but fellow citizens and members of God's household. This new society is built on the foundation of Jesus, with believers being the living stones of a spiritual temple where God's Spirit dwells.
The Vertical and Horizontal Reconciliation
Christ's death has a dual purpose: it reconciles us to God (vertical) and to one another (horizontal). This unity is essential for the church to function as the body of Christ, reflecting His love and grace to the world.
Life Application
Conclusion
Living in the light of Christ's love and unity is a daily challenge. As you go about your week, ask yourself these questions:
1. How can I remind myself daily of the gospel and its impact on my life?
2. Who in my life needs to experience the love and unity of Christ, and how can I pray for them?
3. What barriers or walls do I need to break down in my relationships to reflect the unity Christ has brought?
By embracing these challenges, we can live out the reality of being a new society in Christ, united in love and purpose.

Life Application
- Preach the Gospel to Yourself Daily - One practical application from today's message is to remember and preach the gospel to yourself daily. Remind yourself of where you once were and how Jesus has brought you near to God. This practice will humble you and influence your interactions with others, fostering a spirit of unity and love.
- Pray for Others - Paul's prayer in Ephesians 3:14-21 is a powerful model for us. This week, pray this prayer for someone in your life, asking God to strengthen them with His Spirit, help them comprehend His love, and fill them with His fullness. Be open to the Spirit's prompting to pray for specific individuals you encounter.
