Coming Home for Christmas Sermon Series - Part 1

Jesus, our Wonderful Counselor

Sermon follow-up 12/9/24

Introduction
Welcome to the Christmas season at Refuge Church! As we journey through Advent, we reflect on the arrival of our Savior, Jesus Christ. This season is a time to remember the hope and light that Jesus brings into our lives. Today, we delve into the prophecy of Isaiah and explore the profound title given to Jesus: Wonderful Counselor.

Why is Christmas Such a Big Deal?
  • The Significance of Jesus' Birth - Christmas is more than just a festive season; it marks the moment when darkness turned to light. Isaiah 9:6 prophesied the birth of Jesus, describing Him as a child born to us, a son given to us, with the government on His shoulders. He is called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. This prophecy, spoken 700 years before Jesus' birth, highlights the hope and future He brings to a world in need.
  • The Context of Isaiah's Prophecy - Isaiah's prophecy was delivered during a time of great distress for the Israelites. They were facing imminent conquest and oppression. The promise of a Savior brought hope to a bleak situation. Fast forward to the time of Jesus' birth, and we see a similar context of oppression and struggle. Jesus entered a world far from perfect, bringing light into the darkness.

Understanding Jesus as Our Wonderful Counselor
  • What Does "Wonderful Counselor" Mean? - The term "Wonderful Counselor" combines two powerful Hebrew words: "pele" (wonderful) and "yoes" (counselor). "Pele" signifies something extraordinary, mind-blowingly awesome, and incomprehensible. "Yoes" refers to someone who understands all the context of your life, speaks wisdom into your situation, and has the authority to bring about change.
  • The Role of the Holy Spirit - As believers, we have the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Jesus Christ, dwelling within us. The Holy Spirit acts as our Wonderful Counselor, guiding us through life's challenges, providing wisdom, and having the authority to bring about transformation.

The Reality of Christmas
  • Christmas Isn't About Perfection - Christmas often conjures images of perfection, but the reality is far from it. The first Christmas was marked by hardship and struggle. Jesus was born into poverty and faced significant challenges. The season highlights the truth that life is tough, but it also reminds us that God entered our world to bring hope and light.
  • The Slaughter of the Innocents - One often overlooked aspect of the Christmas story is the slaughter of the innocents. King Herod's decree to kill all boys under two in Bethlehem was a tragic event. This reminds us that Christmas isn't about a perfect world but about God's intervention in our brokenness.

Life Application

  • 1. Be Honest with Your Counselor:  A counselor can only help if you're honest. Jesus, our Wonderful Counselor, knows all the dark corners of our hearts. We must be open and transparent with Him, allowing Him to work on the areas we try to hide.
  • 2. Go to the Counselor for Counsel:  When seeking wisdom, turn to Jesus. Isaiah 8:19-20 warns against seeking guidance from mediums and spiritists. Instead, consult God's instruction. Jesus, the light of the world, provides clear guidance and wisdom for our lives.

Questions to Reflect On:
1. What areas of your life do you need to be more honest with Jesus about?
2. Where are you seeking counsel and wisdom? Are you turning to Jesus first?
3. How can you slow down this Christmas season to truly reflect on the significance of Jesus' birth?

Conclusion
As we approach Christmas, let's remember the profound gift of Jesus, our Wonderful Counselor. Reflect on the areas of your life where you need His guidance and be open to His transformative work.
