Ephesians Sermon Series - Part 4

Unity in Christ - New Relationships

Sermon follow-up 12/2/24

Introduction
As we transition from Thanksgiving into the Christmas season, we are reminded of the importance of relationships and community. Today’s sermon, based on Ephesians 5 and 6, delves into how our relationships are redefined in Christ. Let’s explore how being filled with the Holy Spirit transforms our fellowship, worship, gratitude, and submission to one another.

What Does It Mean to Walk Wisely?

Be On Guard
Paul begins by urging us to "look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil" (Ephesians 5:15-16). This call to vigilance is akin to a night watchman guarding a fortress. We are to be alert and aware of the spiritual battles around us, understanding that our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12).

The Importance of Being Filled with the Spirit
Paul emphasizes that our ability to walk wisely and engage in spiritual warfare is dependent on being filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). This filling is not a one-time event but a continuous process that empowers us to live out our faith.

How Does the Holy Spirit Transform Our Relationships?

  • 1. Fellowship: Addressing One Another - Paul instructs us to address one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19). This means that our interactions should be filled with encouragement and spiritual edification. Gathering together as a community is crucial for maintaining unity and supporting one another in our walk with Christ.

  • 2. Worship: Singing and Making Melody - Worship is a powerful expression of our faith. Paul highlights that our worship should not only be a public act but also a private, ongoing melody in our hearts (Ephesians 5:19). Worship changes us and impacts those around us, drawing others to the beauty of Christ.

  • 3. Gratitude: Giving Thanks Always - Gratitude is a natural outflow of being filled with the Spirit. Paul encourages us to give thanks always and for everything (Ephesians 5:20). This attitude of gratitude reshapes our perspective and helps us recognize God's hand in every aspect of our lives.

  • 4. Submission: Out of Reverence for Christ - Finally, Paul calls us to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ (Ephesians 5:21). This submission is a reflection of the humility and gentleness of the Holy Spirit. It is essential for maintaining unity and demonstrating the love of Christ in our relationships.

Life Application - Living Out Our New Relationships
As we reflect on today’s message, let’s consider how we can apply these principles in our daily lives. Here are a few questions to ponder:

1. Fellowship: How can I be more intentional about gathering with my church community and encouraging others in their faith?
2. Worship: Am I allowing worship to be a constant melody in my heart, impacting my daily life and those around me?
3. Gratitude: How can I cultivate a spirit of gratitude, recognizing God's blessings in every situation?
4. Submission: In what ways can I demonstrate humility and submit to others out of reverence for Christ?

A Challenge for the Week - This week, I challenge you to pray this simple prayer: "God, if there’s more of your Spirit, I want it. Would you fill me anew today with your Spirit?" Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you in your relationships, transforming your interactions and drawing you closer to Christ.

Conclusion
In Christ, our relationships are redefined and empowered by the Holy Spirit. As we walk wisely, filled with the Spirit, we experience deeper fellowship, more profound worship, greater gratitude, and genuine submission. Let’s embrace these new relationships in Christ and live out our faith with joy and unity.
