The Way to Victory Sermon Series - Part 3

Sermon follow-up 4/14/25

Introduction

Jesus' journey to victory came through an unexpected path - one that required him to stoop low in order to conquer. While Palm Sunday marked his triumphal entry into Jerusalem with crowds shouting "Hosanna!", the true victory would come through his sacrificial death on the cross.

Why Did Jesus Have to Die on the Cross?
Jesus came not just to celebrate Passover in Jerusalem, but to become the ultimate Passover Lamb. Just as the blood of lambs protected the Israelites during the first Passover, Jesus' blood would provide permanent protection from spiritual death for all who believe in Him.

How Was Jesus' Death Prophesied?
The details of Jesus' crucifixion were prophesied centuries before in remarkable detail:
  • Being given vinegar to drink (Psalm 69:21)
  • Having his garments divided (Psalm 22:18)
  • Being crucified between criminals (Isaiah 53:12)
  • Being mocked by onlookers (Psalm 22:6-8)
  • Having his hands and feet pierced (Psalm 22:16)
  • Darkness covering the land (Amos 8:9)
  • Being buried in a rich man's tomb (Isaiah 53:9)

What Did Jesus' Death Accomplish?
When Jesus died, the temple curtain was torn in two, symbolizing:
  1. The end of separation between God and humanity
  2. Direct access to God through Jesus
  3. No more need for sacrifices
  4. A new covenant established

How Does Jesus' Death Impact Us Today?
Through His death, Jesus:
  • Took our sin upon Himself so we could receive His righteousness
  • Paid for every sin of every person across history
  • Made God's grace freely available to all who believe
  • Defeated death and sin forever

Life Application
  • Consider these questions:
    • How does understanding the prophecies fulfilled in Jesus' death strengthen your faith?
    • In what ways do you need to embrace God's grace today?
    • How should Jesus' sacrifice change how you live?

  • This week, take time to reflect on the enormous cost Jesus paid for your salvation. Remember that your worst days are never beyond God's grace, and your best days never eliminate your need for it. Let this drive you to deeper gratitude and worship.
