The Way to Victory Sermon Series - Part 2

Sermon follow-up 4/7/25

Introduction

In the midst of chaos and uncertainty, we often struggle to see God's hand at work. Through examining Jesus's trial before Pontius Pilate, we discover profound truths about God's control and His incredible love for us.

Who Was Really in Control During Jesus's Trial?
While the scene appears chaotic with multiple parties vying for control:
  • The soldiers had limited authority
  • Pilate, though governor, was driven by fear and political pressure
  • The religious leaders resorted to shouting, revealing their lack of control
  • Jesus alone remained in true control, willingly submitting to fulfill God's plan

How Do We Know God Was in Control?
The details of Jesus's crucifixion fulfilled numerous prophecies written centuries before:
  • The soldiers casting lots for Jesus's garments
  • Jesus's declaration of thirst
  • No bones being broken
  • His side being pierced

These weren't just broad predictions but specific details God orchestrated long before they occurred.

What Does This Tell Us About God's Control in Our Lives?
When life feels chaotic - whether it's finances, relationships, health, or future uncertainties - God remains in control. Just as He orchestrated every detail of Jesus's trial and crucifixion, He oversees the details of our lives.

Why Did Jesus Submit to Such Suffering?
Jesus endured incredible physical and emotional torture:
  1. Brutal flogging
  2. Crown of thorns
  3. Public mockery
  4. Rejection by His own people

He could have stopped it at any moment but chose not to because of His love for us.

How Does This Demonstrate God's Love?
God chose this specific way to deal with sin - through sacrifice - to demonstrate the depth of His love. Rather than choosing an easier path, He gave His very self to prove His love for humanity.
Romans 5:8 captures this beautifully: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Life Application
  • When life feels out of control, remember:
    • God is in control of every detail, just as He was during Jesus's trial
    • His love for you is demonstrated through Christ's willing sacrifice
    • Nothing can separate you from God's love when you choose to follow Him

  • Questions to reflect on:
    • What areas of your life feel out of control right now?
    • How does knowing God's love for you change your perspective on these challenges?
    • In what ways can you demonstrate trust in God's control this week?

Challenge: When facing uncertainty this week, return to John 19 and remember both God's control and His profound love for you demonstrated through Jesus's sacrifice.
