Who Were the Key Players?
The Challenge
Elijah proposed a test to determine the true God. Both he and the prophets of Baal would prepare a bull for sacrifice but would not set it on fire. Instead, they would call upon their respective gods to ignite the offering. The God who answered by fire would be acknowledged as the true God.
The False Prophets' Futile Efforts
From morning till noon, the prophets of Baal called out to their god, danced around the altar, and even slashed themselves, but there was no response. Elijah mocked them, suggesting that perhaps their god was asleep or busy.
Elijah's Bold Faith
Elijah prepared his altar with twelve stones, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. He then drenched the offering and the wood with water three times, making it seemingly impossible to ignite. Elijah prayed to God, asking Him to reveal His power so that the people would know He is the true God.
God's Miraculous Response
God answered Elijah's prayer by sending fire from heaven, consuming the offering, the wood, the stones, and even the water in the trench. The people fell prostrate and declared, "The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!"
