The Servant

Introduction
Jesus provides a completely different perspective on what makes someone truly great. While the world defines greatness through power, authority, and status, Jesus teaches that true greatness comes through serving others.

Our Natural Desire for Greatness
 
We all have an innate desire to be great and leave a legacy. This ambition isn't inherently wrong - it's God-given. However, we often channel it in the wrong direction by seeking worldly recognition and authority over others.

How Does Jesus Define True Greatness?
 
Jesus completely rewrites the definition of greatness. He states that "whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all" (Mark 10:43-44). This turns worldly wisdom upside down - true greatness isn't about:
  • Climbing to the top
  • Getting the best seat
  • Having the best title
  • Receiving special treatment
Instead, greatness in God's kingdom means:
  • Taking the lowest seat
  • Serving without recognition
  • Loving without expecting anything in return
  • Putting others before yourself
What Does Servant Leadership Look Like?

The Greek word for servant gives us the image of a waiter/waitress - someone constantly attentive to others' needs. As followers of Jesus, we should look outward at those God has placed around us and ask "How can I serve them?" This applies in every role:
  • As parents
  • As coworkers
  • As bosses
  • As neighbors
  • As friends
Finding Balance: The Jesus Model

However, serving others shouldn't lead to burnout. Jesus modeled an important rhythm:
  1. Retreat to be with the Father
  2. Go out and serve
  3. Repeat
We must first be with Jesus before we can effectively serve others. This pattern of filling up spiritually and then pouring out in service creates sustainable ministry.

Life Application
  • This week, consider:
    • Where is your ambition directed - toward worldly success or kingdom service?
    • How can you practically serve those around you in your different roles?
    • Are you maintaining the rhythm of being with Jesus before serving others?
  • Questions for reflection:
    • What areas of your life do you need to shift from seeking recognition to seeking to serve?
    • Who has God placed in your life that you can intentionally serve this week?
    • How can you build more time with Jesus into your schedule to fuel your service?
The challenge: Choose one person or group to intentionally serve this week, expecting nothing in return. Before serving, spend time with Jesus to fill your spiritual tank.
